Class of 2014 Black Belts - Cameron Gohs JKN
My Journey To Black Belt
By: Cameron Gohs JKN

When I was younger I wanted to do Karate so my parents signed me up for Tang Soo Do. They didn't like the approach so the signed me up for Kuk Sool Won. At first I thought it was going to be easy because my first test was five techniques and part of a form and my home address (specific to the entire galaxy). During my time as a Yellow Belt I had to learn a little more but not too much. At the test I wasn't worried.
During my time as a Blue Belt I had to learn things that were harder like trapping blocks and higher falls. At the test I was a little worried about failing but I passed. I got my Red Belt, but went to tournament as a Blue Belt where I got fourth place twice. Red Belt I think was one of the hardest because it becomes more advanced like the low kicks (Ha Dahn Johk Sool) and more jump kicks and spin kicks. Also new techniques became harder and harder to learn. At my stripe test my legs wanted to give up but I pushed through and passed. After that I had to learn even more until the next test. At the test I almost passed out from the forms. But I pushed through and passed.

The hardest time of all was Brown Belt because I had to start doing knuckle pushups and learn a lot of new things like high falls and new kicks and hand-strikes. At the test I failed and wanted to quit but I stayed and got to the next rank. Black Brown is when I wanted to quit almost always. I was always pushed hard but I made through a little bit before wanting to quit again. Multiple times after almost passing out I wanted to quit, but I stuck with it and learned more. Throughout the entire time I was always learning. Until the day of the seminar. That day I tested in front of the masters. Later at the end of the seminar I got my Black Belt, finished my journey, and started a new one. Everything was worth it! Then I was a Black Belt, which is what I wanted from the start. I now am a Black Belt and my journey continues.
