Class of 2014 Black Belts - Tyler Wright JKN
My Journey To Black Belt
By: Tyler Wright JKN

My journey began one day after school when I was in the third grade. I came home and told my dad that I wanted to do martial arts. I just wanted to do karate like all the boys that age. He said he had a cousin (SBN Ken Wright) that taught martial arts. So my dad looked him up and contacted him. We went to the school about a week later for a try-out class. I liked it so much that my sister and my dad decided join too and this is where it began.
After we joined, I made some friends. I had met Chase and Cameron. As the months went by, more people joined and some people quit including Chase. This went on until Cameron and I were in Kuk Sool Won for 6 months when the school moved locations. Then things started to change when Cameron and I got out black-brown belts. When we began testing for our black belt we found out really fast that you couldn’t mess around anymore. We couldn’t talk about movies and games during class anymore or it was push-ups, a lot of them. Then Hayley and Rachel, a couple of kids our age, reached our rank and we all started talking and we became friends and Jakob, another kid my age, started to go to school with me so he joined in our little group too.

While I have been in Kuk Sool Won, I have learned six forms, and over a hundred and eighty techniques. My favorite is Too Ki thirteen. I have also been to countless Kuk Sool Won events, my favorite being when I got my black belt at the Midwest championships in St. Louis with my dad. I also love to compete in staff at the tournaments.
In order to get my black belt, I had to overcome every test I did. Each one was harder than to last. After every test, I told my dad I thought that was my last test and he kept helping me to overcome every other test. Since getting my black belt I have learned respect, honesty, self-discipline and confidence. Last but not least, I would like to thank my dad for paying for the classes and sticking with me through the whole journey.
